What is the Pomodoro Technique?

The Pomodoro Technique is a time management method developed by Francesco Cirillo in the late 1980s. The technique uses a timer to break work into intervals, usually 25 minutes. Set Timer for Work Interval (Pomodoro)

Set a timer for 25 minutes and focus on a single task without thinking about anything else. Ready to start? Use our Pomodoro Timer Tool to set your first 25- minutes interval. 

Short Break

After the set time is up, take a rewarding short break, usually of 5 minutes.

Repeat The Process

Repeat this process for a total of four Pomodoros.

Long Break

What does Pomodoro mean?  

It is an Italian word for tomato. The first timer that Francesco Cirillo used was shaped like a tomato. That’s where he got the name Pomodoro Timer.

I have checked a lot of Pomodoro timers online. They all come with their own distractions. Some offer to select your own background or allow you to change the aesthetics, some offer you to select your own music, and so on. Now, if you like those things, that is totally fine. Why Does the Pomodoro Timer Technique Work So Effectively?

You might be thinking this is too good to be true. Or what is the actual psychology behind it? Is it just another internet fairy tale? When I went to look for proof, I did not think that I would find such massive research support for this simple technique. To keep this article plain and simple, I am going to link all the references to the studies at the end of the page.

Here are the top 5 reasons backed by research why the Pomodoro Timer works so well:

1. Breaks Tasks into Manageable Portions

Cognitive psychologist George A. Miller of Harvard’s Department of Psychology published a paper called “The Magical Number Seven, Plus or Minus Two: Some Limits on Our Capacity for Processing Information.” This is one of the most highly cited papers in psychology. George Miller argued that humans can only hold about seven pieces of information (plus or minus two) in their working memory at once. This is what the Pomodoro Timer does. It breaks the information into smaller portions. It aligns with the cognitive limitations identified by George Miller4.

2. Maintaining a High Level of Focus

Twenty-five minutes is enough time—not too long to lose focus and not too short to finish the task. This structure prevents cognitive fatigue. The premise set in the study by K. Anders Ericsson, Ralf Th. Krampe and Clemens Tesch-Römer is that intense focus can be maintained for about 90 minutes before cognitive fatigue sets in5. The Pomodoro Technique’s intervals are within this limit, thus making it easier to maintain a high level of focus.

3. Frequent Break Intervals Prevent Burnouts

A study done by DeskTime on productivity back in 2014 showed that the best workers tend to work for 50-60 minutes and then take 15-20-minute breaks6. It is the same principle incorporated by the Pomodoro Timer.

4. Time Awareness

The developer of the technique, Francesco Cirillo, observed in his book “The Pomodoro Technique: The Acclaimed Time-Management System That Has Transformed How We Work” that setting 25-minute intervals makes students more aware of the time passing. This awareness helps in planning and prioritizing tasks7.

5. Reduction in Procrastination

Steel, P. addressed in “The Procrastination Equation: How to Stop Putting Things Off and Start Getting Stuff Done” (2010) that breaking tasks into less intimidating pieces reduces the likelihood of procrastination8. For example, if you are writing a paper and need to research it, set one Pomodoro only to sort out the material you will use in your research. Skim through the resources that will help in your research. Make a list. By the end of 25 minutes, you will have enough resources to go through. Then in the next Pomodoro, decide that you will do your research in a few of the resources listed and gather material for the paper. Within a few Pomodoros, you will start building material for your paper. Always remember, baby steps are the way to go.
